Post-Quantum Cryptography

Quantum-Proof
Encryption

OrbVPN uses NIST-approved post-quantum algorithms to protect your data against future quantum computer attacks. Your traffic is secure today and tomorrow.

The Quantum Threat

Quantum computers are rapidly advancing. When they become powerful enough, they'll break the encryption protecting most of today's internet traffic.

"Harvest Now, Decrypt Later": Adversaries are already collecting encrypted data to decrypt once quantum computers are available. If your data matters in 10 years, it needs quantum-safe encryption today.

Now

Traditional encryption is secure against classical computers

2030s

Quantum computers may break RSA and ECC encryption

Today

OrbVPN already uses post-quantum algorithms

NIST-Approved Algorithms

We implement the algorithms selected by NIST after years of rigorous evaluation.

Kyber768

NIST Approved

Key Encapsulation

Lattice-based algorithm for secure key exchange. Resistant to both classical and quantum attacks.

Dilithium

NIST Approved

Digital Signatures

Lattice-based signature scheme for authenticating communications.

SPHINCS+

NIST Approved

Backup Signatures

Hash-based signatures as a fallback, based on different mathematical foundations.

Hybrid Implementation

We use a hybrid approach that combines classical and post-quantum algorithms:

  • Double Protection: Both classical and post-quantum keys must be broken to compromise the connection.
  • Fallback Safety: If issues are found in post-quantum algorithms, classical encryption still protects you.
  • Industry Standard: This hybrid approach is recommended by NIST and major security organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is post-quantum cryptography?+
Post-quantum cryptography refers to encryption algorithms designed to be secure against attacks from quantum computers. These use mathematical problems that are hard for both classical and quantum computers to solve.
Why should I care about quantum computers?+
Quantum computers could break most current encryption within the next 10-15 years. This means encrypted data captured today could be decrypted in the future. This is called 'harvest now, decrypt later' attack.
Does post-quantum encryption slow down my connection?+
There's a small overhead (~10-15%) during the initial handshake. Once connected, there's no noticeable difference in speed. We use hybrid encryption that combines classical and post-quantum for best of both worlds.
Is OrbVPN the only VPN with post-quantum encryption?+
We were among the first VPN providers to implement post-quantum encryption. While others are starting to adopt it, we've had it in production since 2024.
