Smart Connect & Auto Failover

One tap that always finds a way through. Smart Connect races protocols, transports, and mimicry profiles for your network, then proves the connection is real before it hands it to you — so you are never left staring at a fake 'connected' that passes no traffic.

What Smart Connect Does

Auto (Smart Connect) is the default, recommended way to connect. Instead of asking you to guess which protocol survives your network today, it builds a region-aware fallback chain, tries each candidate in the smartest order, and verifies that real traffic actually flows and your public IP truly changed before it settles on a path.

It is the single most powerful feature for users on censored or unpredictable networks — and it never reports a connection it could not verify.

Races the Best Candidates

Smart Connect tries protocols, transports, and mimicry profiles in the order most likely to work for your detected region — fastest-first on open networks, stealth-first on censored ones.

Verifies Real Traffic

After the tunnel comes up, OrbVPN fetches your public IP from multiple independent services and confirms it changed to the VPN's. A handshake that passes no traffic is rejected, not shown as connected.

Region-Aware Chains

In Iran, Russia, and China it leads with the transports measured to survive there — Reality, Plain TCP, CDN-Fronting, and OSSH — instead of wasting time on paths the firewall already blocks.

Detects Dead Transports

Smart Connect measures the network first. If UDP is black-holed or a transport is unreachable, it skips it rather than hanging on a connection that will never complete.

No fake connections, ever

Smart Connect's promise is honesty. It will only mark you connected once it has verified that your traffic is leaving through the tunnel and your IP has changed. If every candidate fails, it tells you — instead of leaving you 'connected' with no internet.

How the Fallback Chain Works

When you connect on Auto, OrbVPN runs through a chain of attempts. Each attempt is a specific protocol + transport + mimicry combination. The order is tuned to your region.

1

Detect Region & Network

OrbVPN determines your region (or uses your manual override) and, in restricted regions, runs a quick parallel probe to see which transports the network actually permits right now.

2

Build the Chain

It assembles an ordered list of candidates. On open networks WireGuard leads for speed. In censored regions VLESS Reality, Plain TCP, CDN-Fronting, and OSSH lead for stealth.

3

Try, Then Verify

Each candidate is attempted in turn. The moment one establishes a tunnel, traffic verification runs — public IP check plus connectivity test.

4

Lock In or Advance

If verification passes, that path is locked in and remembered for next time. If it fails or times out, Smart Connect moves to the next candidate automatically.

5

Remember What Worked

OrbVPN remembers the winning combination so your next connection on the same network starts with the path most likely to succeed.

When to Use Smart Connect

You Are Not Sure What Works

New network, travelling, or a sudden block? Auto figures it out so you do not have to test protocols by hand.

You Are in a Censored Region

Iran, Russia, or China. Smart Connect leads with the transports measured to survive there and rotates mimicry profiles for you.

Your Network Keeps Changing

ISP throttling, Wi-Fi to cellular handoffs, captive portals. Auto re-evaluates and finds a fresh working path.

You Just Want It to Connect

The simplest, most reliable choice for everyday use. Set it once and forget about protocol menus.

Troubleshooting Smart Connect

Auto Takes a While to Connect

In heavily censored regions, Smart Connect probes the network and may try several stealth transports before one passes. This is by design — it is finding a path that actually works rather than failing fast.

Connected but IP Did Not Change

This should not happen on Auto — verification rejects it. If you see it on a manually selected protocol, switch to Auto so traffic verification can catch and skip the dead path.

All Candidates Failed

If the whole chain fails, your network may be blocking even the stealth paths, or geolocation guessed the wrong region. Set a manual region override and try again. See the Region & Failover guide.

Want a Specific Protocol

Smart Connect is recommended, but you can pin a single protocol and transport at any time from the Protocol screen if you have a reason to. See Protocol Selection.

Set a region override if geolocation is wrong

Smart Connect's region detection drives the whole chain. If you are inside Iran, Russia, or China but the app guessed wrong (for example because of your device language or time zone), set a manual region override in Settings so Auto builds the censorship-aware chain. Details are in the Region & Failover guide.
